Developing strong hitting fundamentals at a young age is key to long-term success in baseball. At The Pen in Tacoma, we work with players of all skill levels to improve mechanics, timing, and confidence at the plate.
Whether your child is just starting out or preparing for competitive play, these five hitting drills will help them become a more consistent and powerful hitter.
Why it matters:
A batting tee is one of the most effective tools for building muscle memory. It allows players to focus solely on swing mechanics without worrying about timing a pitch.
How to do it:
Set the tee at waist height.
Emphasize proper stance, grip, and follow-through.
Take 15–20 swings focusing on solid contact to the middle of the field.
Pro Tip:
Vary tee height to simulate pitches high and low in the strike zone.
Soft toss introduces a moving ball while still allowing for a controlled environment.
Steps:
A coach or parent kneels to the side and lightly tosses the ball across the hitter’s body.
The player works on tracking the ball and making consistent contact.
Goal:
Build rhythm and timing while maintaining proper mechanics.
Front toss helps young players get comfortable with a pitcher in front of them without the pressure of full-speed pitches.
Instructions:
Stand about 15 feet in front of the hitter behind a screen.
Toss balls underhand or lightly overhand at a controlled pace.
Encourage hitters to focus on timing and driving the ball up the middle.
Players need a plan when they have two strikes.
Setup:
Simulate a game situation with two strikes.
The hitter focuses on making contact and protecting the plate.
Encourage a slightly shorter, more compact swing.
Result:
Reduces strikeouts and builds confidence in tough counts.
Nothing beats the feel of live pitching.
Use a pitching machine or live pitcher.
Mix pitch speeds to teach adjustment.
Challenge hitters to apply everything they’ve learned in previous drills.
While these drills can be done at home, proper coaching ensures that young players build correct habits. At The Pen in Tacoma, our instructors specialize in:
Swing analysis
